How Does PRP Therapy Make Transplanted Hair Stronger and Fuller?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy is a medical procedure that involves extracting a concentrated form of platelets from a person's blood and injecting it into specific areas, including the scalp in the case of hair restoration. PRP contains various growth factors and proteins that play a role in tissue repair and regeneration.

When used in hair grafting procedures, PRP can enhance the survival of newly transplanted hair follicles and promote new hair growth in several ways.

  • Improved Blood Supply: PRP contains growth factors that stimulate blood vessel formation, known as angiogenesis. By injecting PRP into the scalp, it can enhance the blood supply to the transplanted hair follicles. This increased blood flow provides essential nutrients, oxygen, and growth factors to the follicles, promoting their survival and accelerating the healing process.

Enhanced Healing and Tissue Repair: PRP contains various growth factors, including platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). These growth factors promote cell proliferation, collagen synthesis, and tissue regeneration. When injected into the scalp after hair grafting, PRP can expedite the healing process and aid in the repair of damaged tissues, including the transplanted follicles.

Activation of Dormant Hair Follicles: PRP can also help stimulate dormant hair follicles, which are present but not actively producing hair. The growth factors present in PRP can awaken these dormant follicles, promoting the growth of new, thicker, and healthier hair strands.

Prolonged Growth Cycle: Hair follicles undergo a growth cycle that consists of active growth (anagen phase), regression (catagen phase), and resting (telogen phase). By injecting PRP into the scalp, it can potentially prolong the anagen phase, the active growth period of the hair follicles. This extended growth cycle allows the hair strands to grow longer and thicker before entering the regression phase, leading to improved hair density and quality.

Important to note that while PRP has shown promising results in hair restoration procedures, its efficacy may vary depending on individual factors such as the extent of hair loss, overall health, and underlying causes of hair loss.

It is recommended to consult with one of our Better Health Medical Center qualified medical professionals experienced in PRP therapy to determine its suitability and expected outcomes in individual cases. This procedure is not covered by insurance.
